Design system

How this site's colors and type scale are built, and how a theme re-points the same components at different values.

Token files become primitives, primitives feed semantic tokens, and Style Dictionary turns them into CSS. Open the dev bar and switch themes: the semantic layer re-points at different primitives while the components stay untouched. Edit src/tokens/, never the generated files.

Getting started#

Pipeline#

  1. 1Token filesDTCG-format JSON. The single source of truth, edited by hand. src/tokens/**/*.json
  2. 2Primitive tokensRaw palette and type values, emitted as --ref-*. Never used by components. primitive/
  3. 3Semantic tokensPurpose-named roles built only from primitives. This is the layer a theme changes. semantic/themes/
  4. 4Component tokensPer-component tokens built from semantic tokens first, primitives only where nothing semantic fits. Shared by every theme. component/
  5. 5CSS outputStyle Dictionary resolves the references: one :root block, plus a [data-theme] block per theme for the semantic tier. tokens.generated.css

213 primitives, 10 semantic tokens, 63 component tokens, 10 themes.

One value, followed through every tier. A theme swaps the primitive a semantic role points at; component tokens never change, they just inherit.

What exports

Color, type sizes, line heights, weight, tracking and elevation are DTCG tokens, so the same build can emit Figma variables, iOS, Android or email by adding a platform in sd.config.mjs. Fonts, border radius, border thickness, the two shapes and density are runtime settings in TypeScript (src/lib/), so they are web-only today; moving them into the pipeline is the step a native team would need.

Tiers and naming#

Each tier is built only from the one below it, which keeps the set small and the theming in one place:

  1. Primitives hold raw values (--ref-color-lime-600) and are never used by components.
  2. Semantic tokens name a purpose (--surface, --content-muted, --primary) and are built only from primitives. A theme sets them once for each region (the light canvas and the dark inverse region, marked with data-region="inverse") under the same names; the muted, subtle and on-color variants are derived from those bases in shared files.
  3. Component tokens are named --component-part (--card-border, --nav-link-label) and are built from semantic tokens first; because they are re-resolved inside every region, a component restyles itself wherever it is placed; a primitive is used only where no semantic role fits, and the build reports each one.
  4. Variants are computed; a change of role is a token. A component applies a shift of the same color on top of the token itself: an opacity with Tailwind's modifier (text-page-text/75), or the accent shifted darker on hover (accentLink in src/lib/variants.ts). A hover that swaps to a different base role is a token (--button-bg-hover, --button-text-hover, --button-ghost-text-hover, --button-outline-text-hover, --emphasis-toggle-text-hover). A theme only has to think about its base colors, and the contrast check measures the same variants.

Two names to watch

--accent is the vivid brand color and --primary is the strong fill (navy by default, behind the contact button). Component libraries often use those names the other way round (accent as a subtle hover fill), so a token from one will not drop into the other unchanged. The semantic names are unprefixed (--surface, --line) because nothing else shares this page; a package would prefix them.

Tokens#

Every kind of token below is documented the same way: the primitive scale you pick from, and the semantic variables that choice sets and that components read. Color is defined per theme in the token files; type sizes, line heights, weight, tracking and elevation are tokens in the pipeline above; the rest (fonts, radius, border thickness, both shapes and density) are runtime settings defined in TypeScript and written onto <html> by the dev bar. The primitives are read from those same lists and the semantic values are live, so change a setting in the dev bar and watch them move.

Color#

Every color is an oklch() value. Primitives are the raw ramps; semantic tokens are the purpose-named roles a theme points at them, once per region; component tokens, documented with each component below, are what components actually read.

Why oklch

  • Lightness is comparable across hues. The L channel tracks perceived brightness, so lightness can be reasoned about as a number: in HSL, a yellow and a blue at the same lightness are nowhere near equally bright. That is what lets the contrast gate and the derived tokens treat lightness as arithmetic. The ramps here are anchored to each theme's colors rather than normalized, so the same step is close but not identical across hues (step 600 spans L 0.45 to 0.59).
  • Derived colors are arithmetic. Muted text is its base with lightness raised by 0.18, a link hover is 0.06 darker: oklch(from var(--content) calc(l + 0.18) c h). The browser evaluates it live, so changing a base color carries every shade with it, with no per-theme copies.
  • Room beyond sRGB.Chroma is not capped at the sRGB gamut, so a vivid accent keeps its intent on wide-gamut displays; browsers map it to what the screen can show. Using one format everywhere also means no mixing hex, rgb and hsl and converting between them. The colors themselves are never clipped. Only the contrast check converts them to sRGB to measure (WCAG's formula is defined on sRGB), so for a high-chroma step (lime 300) the measured ratio can differ slightly from what a display's own gamut mapping produces.
  • Browser support. Relative color syntax needs roughly Chrome 119, Safari 16.4 (with oklch() itself) and Firefox 128, about 97% of US users. This site does not ship a fallback. If analytics ever showed the gap mattered, the route would be an @supports (color: oklch(from red l c h))block over static values generated from the manifest, which already holds each token's evaluated color.

Primitive

The full ramps the Default theme draws from. Outlined swatches are the steps its semantic tokens point at; the rest are there to reach for. Switch themes in the dev bar to see a different set.

Semantic

A theme is two regions with the same token names: the default region (the light canvas) and the inverse region (the dark sidebar, marked with data-region="inverse"). It sets 6 base colors for one and 4 for the other, each built from a primitive; the rest are derived: muted text and the subtle and raised surfaces as live CSS formulas over the base colors (relative color syntax, so they follow whatever the base is), and the text on an accent or primary fill (--on-accent, --on-primary) as whichever of the region's surface and content has more contrast on it. Component tokens re-resolve inside a region, so a component restyles itself wherever it is placed. Each row shows the token it is set to; switch themes in the dev bar to watch them re-point.

Fonts#

Twelve families, three each of sans-serif, serif, display and handwritten, each loaded once in layout.tsxon its own variable. Any of them can be the heading; only the sans-serif and serif ones can be the body: choosing one repoints the matching semantic role at it. The heading also has weight and tracking tokens (in the pipeline), which a font can override, for example single-weight fonts use 400 so headings don't fake a bold.

Type sizes#

Nine steps, each a primitive in the pipeline (font.size.*) and a semantic --text-* token. The Type tab multiplies the whole scale, so every text-* class follows.

Primitive

Line height#

Each step has a paired line height (a primitive, font.line-height.*), and the named leading-* values sit alongside. One multiplier scales them all.

Primitive

Leading multiplier (9 line-height primitives)

  • Tightest 0.8x
  • Tighter 0.9x

  • Loose 1.1x
  • Looser 1.2x

Semantic

  • --text-*--line-heightpaired line height per step—
  • --leading-tight … --leading-loosenamed leading values—

Default: Default (1x) · Used by: every text-* and leading-* class

Border radius#

Picking a size treats it as the new lgand scales the rest by Tailwind's own ratios, so every rounded-* utility responds with no component changes.

Primitive

Base radius (becomes lg)

  • None 0rem
  • Xs 0.125rem
  • Sm 0.25rem
  • Md 0.375rem
  • Lg 0.5rem

  • --radius-mdlg × 0.75—
  • --radius-lgthe picked base—
  • --radius-xllg × 1.5—
  • --radius-2xllg × 2—

Default: Lg (0.5rem) · Used by: every rounded-* class

Button shape#

Square, rounded or pill. Rounded follows the radius scale (lg, and a smaller step for small sizes). The Button's default shape reads these.

Primitive

Shapes

  • Square 0
  • Rounded lg / min(md, 10px)
  • Pill 9999px

Semantic

  • --radius-buttondefault and larger sizes—
  • --radius-button-smthe sm and icon sizes—

Default: Rounded · Used by: Button (default shape)

Accent shape#

The shape of small accents: avatars, timeline markers, the eyebrow dot, the dev bar, and any Button with shape="accent". Components use rounded-(--radius-accent), so a plain rounded-full stays a real circle.

Primitive

Shapes

  • Square 0
  • Rounded 2xl (lg × 2)
  • Pill/Circle 9999px

Semantic

  • --radius-accentaccent corner radius—

Default: Pill/Circle · Used by: Avatar, Timeline markers, Eyebrow dot, Dev bar, Button (accent shape)

Elevation#

Five shadow tiers, each a primitive in the pipeline (elevation.*). --elevation is the semantic token pointing at the active one, and components read it with shadow-elevation, so the dialogs and the dev bar follow the setting with no component changes.

Primitive

Shadow tiers

  • None --ref-elevation-none
  • Xs --ref-elevation-xs
  • Sm --ref-elevation-sm
  • Md --ref-elevation-md
  • Lg --ref-elevation-lg

Semantic

  • --elevationthe active tier (shadow-elevation)—

Default: Lg · Used by: dialogs (shadow-elevation) and the dev bar

Border thickness#

Border widths compile to literal pixels, so thickness is its own variable that components read with border-(length:--border-width). --border-on is 1 or 0 so layout that only exists to make room for a line can collapse with it.

Primitive

Widths

  • None 0px
  • Sm 1px
  • Md 2px
  • Lg 3px

Semantic

  • --border-widththe line thickness—
  • --border-width-controlthe same, but never under 1px: a control's edge—
  • --border-on1 when borders show, 0 at None—

Default: Sm (1px) · Used by: every border, divider, the timeline rail and the nav lines (Button borders use the control width)

Density#

Two multipliers, horizontal and vertical, on Tailwind's spacing unit. spacing.css re-declares every spacing utility against them, so no component changes; at 1 on both axes the output is identical. Wrap anything that should ignore the setting in .spacing-fixed (the dev bar and /resume do).

Primitive

Horizontal (X) multiplier

  • 0.5 0.5x
  • 0.75 0.75x
  • 1 1x
  • 1.25 1.25x
  • 1.5 1.5x

Vertical (Y) multiplier

  • 0.5 0.5x
  • 0.75 0.75x
  • 1 1x
  • 1.25 1.25x
  • 1.5 1.5x

Semantic

  • --sp-scale-xthe X multiplier—
  • --sp-scale-ythe Y multiplier—
  • --sp-xspacing unit × X—
  • --sp-yspacing unit × Y—

Default: 1 x 1 · Used by: every padding, margin and gap utility

Components#

Every component on the site, grouped as foundations, primitives, patterns, sections and tools. Each has a live preview, the source files that implement it, the tokens it owns, and any tokens it borrows from other components (found by scanning its source at build time), which are candidates for tokens of its own. Component tokens are built from semantic tokens first, and from primitives only where no semantic role fits (today: 2). Components apply their own hover, focus and transparency variants on top, so those are not listed. These files are the same for every theme; switch themes and type settings in the dev bar to see each component respond.

Button#

One Button with three independent axes. Variant is the color treatment (and the only axis with tokens), size is padding and type (the small sizes also take the smaller radius step), and shape is the corner radius: default follows the dev bar's Button Shape, accent follows its Accent Shape. Try the Feel tab to watch them respond. The accent variant is also the skip-to-content link, which is just an accent Button kept off-screen until it receives keyboard focus.

Accessibility

A native button (or the child link with asChild): Enter and Space activate it. The focus ring is the solid accent with a 2px offset in the page color, so it stays visible on an accent fill. Icon-only buttons need an aria-label. A 24px minimum target (WCAG 2.5.8) holds at every density, and the control border width keeps a 1px edge even with Border Thickness set to None.

Beyond the tokens#

A token set is the start of a system, not the whole of one. This is what surrounds it here, and what it leaves out.

Testing#

The theming contract is tested where it can break. Expected values are never copied into a test: they are read from the generated manifest (src/lib/tokens.generated.json), so a test cannot drift from the tokens. Colors are compared by painting both on a 1x1 canvas, because a browser rounds the serialization of a relative-color formula. Run them with pnpm test:unit and pnpm test:e2e.

SuiteWhat it assertsScope
unit/build-gate.test.mjsThe token build refuses a broken theme and names the cause: a missing inverse base color, a too-dark accent, a component reaching into the inverse tier, an adjusted component token, a theme setting a derived token, a focus ring that does not contrast with its surface. A hue split is only an advisory, and no theme token is built from black.Real build script, one deliberate break per test
unit/token-color.test.mjsThe color maths behind the gate: oklch parsing and formatting, lightness adjustments, WCAG contrast (including translucent foregrounds), CSS variable naming and relative-color formulas.Pure functions
e2e/theme-contract.spec.tsEvery semantic token resolves in the browser to its manifest value, the sidebar paints the inverse surface and the canvas the default one, and the accent and primary fill differ by region.Every theme x both regions
e2e/region-components.spec.tsComponents restyle by region with no per-region code: Button variants, nav links and text selection read their component tokens in Default and Inverse.Every theme x both regions, on the /design-system specimens
e2e/design-intent.spec.tsThe look matches the intent: dark sidebar on a light canvas, the contact button's fill and text, muted text receding behind body text, and the default theme's brand colors.Every theme; default theme brand colors
e2e/a11y.spec.tsaxe-core finds no serious or critical violations, and a sanity check proves axe really evaluates oklch() colors.Home, /design-system and the locked case study, in every theme
e2e/controls.spec.tsAccessibility floors under the dev bar's extremes: an Outline button keeps its 1px border at Border Thickness None, a small button stays at least 24px at 0.5x density, and the focused skip link draws an offset ring.Default theme, forced settings
e2e/persistence.spec.tsSettings follow you across pages, the stored theme is applied before first paint (the init scripts must stay a plain inline script in the head), Reset clears them, and the dev bar appears on every page but /resume.Cross-page, first-paint timing
e2e/isolation.spec.tsThe case study's code-rendered figures ignore the dev bar settings while the surrounding site follows them. Skips without the case study password. The unlocked Ledger page
e2e/design-system.spec.tsThe docs page itself: sidebar entries point at headings and highlight on scroll, body text and every heading follow the font, weight and tracking tokens, and scrolling past the sidebar does not scroll the page./design-system

The contrast gate

Derived colors are arithmetic, so each theme is checked, not trusted. On every build, about 60 real component pairs (text on its fill, muted text, nav labels, button states, the focus ring against its offset and the accent fill) are measured against WCAG on all 10themes, in both regions where a component can appear in either: 4.5:1 for text, 3:1 for the focus ring. Translucent variants are composited over their background first, and each color is converted to sRGB to measure it (WCAG's formula is defined on sRGB; the colors on the page are not clipped). A theme that fails any pair does not build.

How it runs

Unit(Node's built-in runner, no browser): the build-gate tests copy the token sources to a temp directory, break one thing, run the real build script and check it fails with the right message, so the gate is itself tested.

End to end (Playwright): locally against the running dev server; in CI, on every pull request, against a production build the job starts itself, with a throwaway case study password. The theme is seeded into localStorage before load, because setting it afterward races the dev bar re-applying the stored one.

No screenshot snapshots, by design: platform-specific baselines are not worth the upkeep, and the computed-style assertions check the values that matter.

Left out on purpose#

Not in the system yet

Status colors (success, warning, danger, info): no component shows a status, so there is no role. Adding one means a semantic role per region, an on-color derived like --on-accent, and contrast pairs, which the build then enforces on every theme.

Motion and layering: durations and easing are set where used (one shared overshoot curve), and overlays and the skip link share z-50. A product with more layers or animation would tokenize both.

Breakpoints are Tailwind's own (sm, lg for site layout; container queries for components sized by their slot).

Elevation and border thickness are each one global setting. Elevation has only overlay consumers today (cards are flat by design), so it is not split by role; if a raised surface appeared it would become --elevation-raised and --elevation-overlay. Border thickness has one split already: a control keeps a 1px border at any thickness (--border-width-control), while hairlines follow the setting down to none.

Versioning and contribution: a single-author site, so there is no changelog; CLAUDE.md holds the rules for adding a component, theme or ramp.

The dev bar is a stress test of the token architecture, not a feature: its extremes (0.5x density, the smallest type) exist to prove the tokens hold, not as recommended settings.
